Joy (2015)

I know I’m kind of alone on this, but I thought Joy was great!  Jennifer Lawrence gives what I believe to be her best performance since Winter’s Bone.  She carries the movie like a professional, covering up potential dry moments.  The way that herself and the other actors interact with each other on screen is fantastic.  I found its story to be incredibly interesting and well-executed.  It may get a little too sentimental with its delivery at the end, but everything that came before makes up for it.

The Big Short (2015)

The Big Short is one entertaining film.  Covering the housing collapse of the mid-2000s, you would think that The Big Short would be hard to follow.  Even though it may be difficult to completely understand all of the specifics of what happened, you understand the important bits.  For a movie that focuses on economics, The Big Short is way more fun than you probably think it would be.  Steve Carell and Christian Bale give splendid performances.

You should give The Big Short a chance!

The Hateful Eight (2015)

Quentin Tarantino does it again!  The Hateful Eight is a hilarious and entertaining western.  Although the film is pretty long, I did not find it to drag too much.  Like most of Tarantino’s movies, the dialogue is witty and very funny.  The Hateful Eight is full of excellent performances.

If you’re a Tarantino fan you should definitely check it out!

Concussion (2015)

Concussion isn’t entertaining all of the way through.  The film is intriguing for the first half, but loses steam in the second.  Will Smith delivers a very good performance and brings an immense likability to Dr. Bennet Omalu.  Concussion focuses on an incredibly important topic when discussing professional sports.  However, the film felt underwhelming considering it discussed a hot-button issue.

The Revenant (2015)

The Revenant is an experience.  Lubezki’s cinematography is spectacular and DiCaprio gives an excellent performance.  Tom Hardy also deserves credit for a very worthy performance.  The Revenant has a captivating story that brings you into its world.

You need to see The Revenant on the big screen!

Youth (2015)

Youth is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve seen this year.  Paolo Sorrentino crafts a majestic and thought-provoking movie.  I found Youth to be very soothing to watch.  Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel give excellent performances.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

The Force Awakens does not disappoint.  The film looks fantastic and it’s one fun ride.  Even if it may have similarities to A New Hope, I think The Force Awakens still stands on its own.  Daisy Ridley and John Boyega are fun together and Adam Driver proves to be a worthy villain.  The Force Awakens may not be the best movie in the franchise, but it’s definitely worth your time and money.

Anomalisa (2015)

Anomalisa is one of the most interesting movies I’ve seen this year.  The film is an R-rated stop-motion animation.  The writing is sharp and funny.  The one flaw I found Anomalisa to have was I felt it was too short.  There were some messages that the film was getting across, but the filmmakers didn’t hammer them home because it ended before it had the opportunity to.

Trumbo (2015)

The best part about Trumbo is Bryan Cranston’s performance.  Although Trumbo is a good film, it falls into the territory of a film that’s good enough to get recognition one year, but not good enough to be remembered.  I just found Trumbo to be a film that seemed like it belonged on television.  It’s very, very fluffy.  I didn’t exactly enjoy watching it too much, but it is a decent movie.

Trumbo is worth a watch, but you shouldn’t rush out to see it.

Creed (2015)

Creed greatly satisfies.  The film is exciting and feels fresh.  Michael B. Jordan gives a very good performance as Adonis Johnson.  Jordan gives you a very likable character to cheer for.  This movie would not be as great as it is without Ryan Coogler’s direction.  Creed is the kind of movie that makes you feel good after watching it.
